On Friday, May 19, 2017, Mayor Kevin Scarpati, city officials, local business owners, and administrators and students from Wilcox Technical High School were on hand to celebrate the unveiling of the new planter boxes in downtown Meriden.
The event marked the installation of the first of 12 planter boxes in downtown Meriden. The 12 planter boxes will be maintained by local business owners that have agreed to “Adopt-a-Planter” to help beautify downtown Meriden. Participating businesses include Nina’s Café, Gallery 53, Ebenezer Restaurant, Wepa Art Studio, the Meriden YMCA and Silver City properties. The planter boxes were designed and constructed by students from Wilcox Technical High School. Funding for the Adopt-a-Planter program was provided by the Community Economic Development Fund through a partnership with the City of Meriden Economic Development Department, the Downtown Neighborhood Association and the Meriden YMCA.
The Adopt-a-Planter program is just one of many activities supported by the downtown community who are working to enliven downtown. Upcoming activities are also scheduled throughout the summer of 2017 including the Friday night Summer Music Series at the Meriden Green (beginning June 15), the Saturday Farmer’s Market (beginning July 8), and family events at the Meriden YMCA, Gallery 53, Wepa Art Studio, Nina’s Café, and other establishments!
